Partner Response "Of Mice and Men"

With your research partner, continue from the discussion(s) we held in class about our readings so far. Be sure that both partners contribute to your post and that it is beyond the general agreements we have made about our research and characters early on and also in the discussions we have held throughout the reading of the "Of Mice and Men."

  1. Between George, Lennie and Curley, choose one character. Do a in-depth character analysis, this may be a continuation from the chosen character during our in-class discussion. Remember, I DO NOT want "he is smart. Curley is short." Explain how his physical appearance affects his character, or how Lennie's lack of intelligence affects others. (At least two paragraphs with in-text examples).
  • Although George seems to have a lot of resentment toward Lennie for their past mishaps, you can tell that it is in George's caring nature that he wants to continue their friendship. George always seems to back-up Lennie's lack of intelligence as he claims, "He ain't no cuckoo. He's dumb as hell, but he ain't crazy, An' I ain't so bright neither," (Steinback 39). As George protects his friend in confrontations and also in questionable moments as he states that Lennie has, "no more harm in him than a kid," it proves that George has a very kind and humble heart, always respecting Lennie for who he really is inside (Steinback 43).

Submit with both partner names to this blog. Due this period.

Curly is a small man, but his confidence is rather high. You can tell when Candy says," Don't tell Curley I said none of this. He;d slough me. He just don;t give a damn. Won't ever get canned 'cause his old mans' the boss." (Steinbeck 27) He is pretty stubborn but as the quote says he can get away with is because his dad is the boss so he can pretty much get away with anything. He gets defensive when he says to Lennie, "Come on you big basarted get off your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. (Steinbeck 62)

Although Lenine is tall and acts or seems retarded, Lenine is also very loyal to George. Because " George snaped his fingures sharply and at the sound lennie laid the mouse in his hand". page 9

Although Lennie is very strong, people don’t know that he is mentally retarded, because George doesn’t let him talk when others are around. Lennie seems intimidating to others because he is a big buff guy, people only see him from the outside, what they don’t know is that Lennie gets scared too. People may think that a big buff guy like him wouldn’t get scared in situations that are handed to him.. but her does.

“Curley was balanced and poised. He slashed as Lennie with his left, and then slashed on his nose with his right. Lennie gave a cry of TERROR blood welled from his nose. “George,” he cried “Make ‘um let me alone George.” He backed up until’ he was against the wall, Curley followed slugging him in the face. Lennie’s hands were made at his sides he was too FRIGHTENED to defend himself.” (John Steinback, Page 63)

In "Of Mice and Men" Curly tend to pompous and cocky about his money and power towards other workers on the ranch. When George talks to the swamper, he states "'Seems like he's gotten worse lately,' said the swamper. ' He got married a couple weeks ago. Wife lives over at the boss's house. Seems like Curley's gotten cockier'n ever since he got married'" Page 26

Another attribute about curly is he is insecure about how he looks, so he makes fun of other people who are larger than him. The book states on page 26 that "'S'pose Curly jumps a big guy n'licks him. Ever'body says what a game guy Curly is.'"

George is smart and compassionate because he is able to get jobs for both him and Lennie. Although he can be mean to Lennie, he still is determined to help him out. In the fourth paragraph on page 15, "Look lennie. I want you to look around here. You can remember this place can't you? The ranch is about a quarter mile up that way. JUs follow the river"

This quote shows that George is both smart and compassionate because he's telling lennie where to go if he gets in to any trouble and that he'll come back for him when time pasts by.

Although Lennie lacks in the education area, he makes up for it with his big, buff figure. His large figure makes people intimidated. In this quote " You gonna give me that mouse or do I have to sock you?"

Curley:

Short- Due to Curleys' short stature, he makes up for his height by acting tough and making trouble to everyone that's taller than him. In the book, Curley gets into a fight with Lennie "come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I will show ya who's yella". (Steinbeck 62)

Curley:

Joy And Kaitlyn-

When Curley first sees Lennie, the first thing he does is give him a look that means he doesn't like him, because Lennie is a big guy. So Curly feels intimidated and also feels the need to prove himself. On page 62, Curley yells at Lennie, "What the hell you laughing at, Come on you big bastard, get up on your feet, no big son of a bitch is gonna laugh at me". He calls him big twice, and Lennie wasn't even paying attention to Curley. Curley wanted to show everyone that he can stand up for himself and be the tough guy even though he's really small. Also, he thinks that he's able to get away with anything since his dads the boss.

Lennie is a bit slower than others and needs more help. That's why George watches out for him. He might not be the smartest, but as described in the story, he's the hardest worker. Lennie is a buff guyso when Curley first approached him, he started picking on him because Curley wants intimidate him.
One example was when Curley tried talking to Lennie, but didn't want to talk to him, and ignored him. Which then lead into Curley getting upset and starts to beat him up. On page 63 it states "Make'um let me alone George."

Curley, a small man, has an unreasonably high level of self confidence. This arrogance can be seen when he gets into a fight with Lennie. "come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I will show ya who's yella". (Steinbeck 62)
Although, he has this "stuck-up" attitude, he can actually be quite handy, according to some other ranch workers: "Curley's pretty handy. He done quite a bit in the ring. He's a lightweight, and he's handy". (Steinbeck 26)

Although Lenine is tall and acts or seems retarded anyone that talks to him it won't hurt him, Lenine is also very loyal to George. Because " George snaped his fingures sharply and at the sound lennie laid the mouse in his hand." (Steinbeck 9) This explains how Lenine is very obedient to George.
Lenine can't get hurt from George when he says mean things like. " You said i was your cousin George. Well that was a lie An' I'm glad it was. If i was a relative of yours I'd shoot myself." This was very harsh statement to Lenine and he didn't care. (Steinbeck 25)

Although Lennie lacks in the education area, he makes up for it with his big, buff figure. His large figure makes people intimidated. But he can show himself weak and scared sometimes, especially from George.

In this part when George tells him "You gonna give me that mouse or do I have to sock you?" (Steinbeck 8) Then right after Lennie gets scared and backs away from George which resembles of him coming off as weak and scared sometimes.
